Why RandomX?

Let’s remind, the essence of the new algorithm is to reorganize its structure. An often raised argument in favor of RandomX adaptation was the constant struggle on the line of Monero developers versus computing system manufacturers. The latter, at an express pace, after each update produced new ASIC miners that were much faster than graphics cards and processors, which was met with strong criticism from miners. The problem is that the creators of the ASICs are not willing to share their technology, they use it on their own and for their own gains. The scale of the phenomenon has become so significant (over 50% of networks were ASICs) that developers have entered the game, who decided to finally solve this problem, so the idea for RandomX came into being.

What can RandomX do?

First of all, RandomX is a hashing algorithm, so the mechanics of operation is similar to that known from other cryptocurrencies: Bitcoin, Ethereum, Zcash. All you need is to supply your computing units with RandomX supporting software and we can join the mining of Monero. The key changes concern what kind of computing units will be most effective. In this aspect, we have a real revolution, all mechanics have been thoroughly rebuilt. 

Who is RandomX for?

As announced, RandomX gives priority to processors. This is the direction Monero has chosen. The first tests confirm that the best performance is provided by high-end processors (Ryzen 3700, 3900). The second are the current leaders – graphics cards. However, here too there have been changes in accents – owners of Nvdia GTX / RTX gain at the expense of AMD RX graphics cards. At the moment there is no information about other computing systems (ASIC, FPGA). It seems that the main goal has been achieved – ASICs have disappeared from the network. This is very good news, for users, for security and for the entire ecosystem. 

RandomX performance

The tests clearly show that the priority belongs to processors. And so Ryzen Rx 3700X reaches 6800 H / s at 100W power consumption. For example, an rig based on 6x GTX 1080Ti (and therefore a high end) can achive up to 4800 H / s with a power consumption of 850W. The top Ryzen 3900 processor can accelerate up to 12,000 H / s.

Conclusions on RandomX

The set goals have been achieved – the mining mechanics of Monero have been thoroughly rebuilt. Unwanted computing systems (ASIC, FPGA) have been eliminated, processors have entered the game, and graphics cards are somewhere in the middle. The network power is steadily increasing, new miners join every day.

The decentralization of computing power according to the POW consensus assumptions – do not share your power where it is dangerous. The sheep’s rush of miners is the Achilles’ heel of our industry. Beware of places like Nicehash, where a lot of miners makes their mining rigs avalible, which are then rented for attacks of 51%. Similarly, avoid large multipools, large mining pools – this power can be used for potential attacks. Choose mining pools that are smaller and help build the right network structure. This is a guarantee that anyone with bad intentions – be it a group of hackers, a corrupted mining pool will not be able to gain significant computing power outside of its own resources, and this makes 51% attack much harder. After all, it is difficult to gather one entity more power than the rest of the world.

To condemn bad practices that accompany the extraction of cryptocurrencies, e.g. the Empty blocks phenomenon – empty blocks that some mining pools include in the network are very harmful – firstly do not contain transactions, and using such empty blocks facilitate 51% attacks – we wrote about it earlier . (without going into details).

The third task – to develop solutions that make attacks difficult and above all APPLY already available solutions. PIRL GUARD is a great example that makes network attacking very difficult. Preliminary findings indicate that perhaps if Ethereum Classic added to its protocol PIRL GUARD, then the whole attack would fail.

 We can continue to look at the next attacks that will take place with great certainty (who will be next?) Or start to set up particular interests and start taking responsibility for the integrity of the network. And this is a task primarily for miners. Eat humble pie those who did park their rigs on Nicehash, eat double humble pie, the ones who made their rigs available in the last 24 hours – your mining rigs were very likely used to carry out an attack on Ethereum Classic.

What has been changed?

 These changes concern the selection of a completely new hashing algorithm called Ubiqhash. UBQ developers have postulated such a solution for a long time, with a block of 660,000, it came to be true – the changes were implemented in the algorithm. From that moment (November 22) the process of mining the UBIQ cryptocurrency will be possible based on the new Ubiqhash algorithm.

Why?

The main reason was the desire to make the process of mining coins independent of the 2 biggest threats related to the Proof Of Work consensus:

The first one is immunization against ASICs – the practice shows that where ASICs appear, the mining profitability ends quickly, and the beneficiaries are large mines that charge bonuses on economies of scale. The implementation of the new algorithm eliminates ASIC from the game, each miner having mining rig based on graphics cards may find the direction of change chosen to be right. It just so happens that the vast majority of the mining community supports the “anti-ASIC” policy, and Ubiq fits in as the first coin of the Ethash family that decided to do it. The main driving forces in this sector are the cryptocurrencies from the Monero family – there the ASICs have been eliminated before.

The second reason is to secure the UBIQ network against 51% attacks. This is a particularly sensitive issue for smaller cryptocurrencies, which are particularly susceptible to such attacks; a relatively small network may turn out to be an easy target for large farms involved in this type of activity. It’s enough to collect a lot of computing power, which will get most of the total hashrate – then you can carry out an effective attack and overwrite the history in the blockchain. The larger the cryptocurrency, the more resources are required, and the chances of success decrease. Thanks to the new algorithm to become independent, the largest portals with computing power will not have a special interest in preparing software for strictly one cryptocurrency, this entails additional costs. It will be easier to “hunt” for other crypts that do not change the algorithm.

What to do to be able to dig Ubiq?

You have to equip your machine park with software that supports Ubiqhash. The fastest option is to choose ZET TOOL v.3.5. From this version, our software supports Ubiqhash and the vast majority of other hash algorithms. Zcash, one of the most popular cryptocurrencies will be updated n the near future . Major update is incoming. New technology knwon as Sapling will be included into Zcash protocol. Thanks to Sapling will allow more privacy. It will happen in the second half of October as a key feature of second anniversary of Zcash.

Mining: Since some time mining on Zcash is mainly by ASIC equipment. No clear statemant if Zcash will be changing algo so far. As a one of the biggest cryptocurrency the network seems safe against double spending attacks. Migration into new algo may happen in the future, probably second half 2019 or first Q1 2020.
